Jackie practices in the areas of insurance coverage and commercial litigation, international business, and mediation.

INSURANCE COVERAGE LITIGATION

Her insurance coverage practice includes the representation of corporate policyholders in complex insurance disputes. Jackie has experience evaluating and litigating coverage questions in the state and federal courts of Louisiana and Texas, and in arbitration and mediation proceedings.

She frequently litigates oil and gas “package” policies, including well control coverage disputes, on behalf of energy policyholders. Jackie also has experience in resolving bio recovery and biohazard cleanup and remediation insurance coverage questions. She represents companies responsible for crime scene and biohazard remediation in the aftermath of tragic situations and other specialized cleanup scenarios. In addition, she assists architect and engineer policyholders in resolving complex professional and general liability claims.

Jackie has also developed an extensive practice dealing with cyber risk management. She regularly represents corporate policyholders in cyber liability insurance claims following cyber-attacks and/or data breaches. She also has experience assisting corporate clients to comply with the varying notification and regulatory obligations triggered by data breaches.

In her cyber practice, Jackie assists businesses with in-house cyber risk assessments to identify potential vulnerabilities, establish protocols that eliminate or minimize those risks, draft cyber-attack and data breach response plans, and evaluate in-place risk management programs to ensure proper risk transfer. She frequently works side-by-side with in-house legal and HR teams to implement or revamp social media policies, personal device protocols, and data retention plans, and has experience advising clients on the risks associated with the use of emerging technologies, like drones. Jackie also undertakes cyber due diligence assessments for corporate clients evaluating prospective business partners and M&A targets.

Prior to joining the firm, Jackie counseled certain underwriters at Lloyd's of London, certain London market insurance companies and several other international and domestic insurers. She was heavily involved in Louisiana commercial litigation cases stemming from Hurricanes Ike, Katrina and Gustav, where she handled force-placed coverage questions, first-party property claims, and business interruption and extra expense claims, among other coverage matters.

Mediation Services

Jackie is a Registered Mediator with the Louisiana State Bar Association. In her mediation and alternative dispute resolution practice, she helps resolve business and commercial litigation disputes, international commercial disputes, and complex insurance coverage questions.

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

Originally from the Republic of Panama, Jackie is fluent in Spanish and regularly advises clients on international commercial transactions in her native language. She is also experienced opining on risk management considerations for multinational corporations.

Nonprofit and other volunteer service

As part of Jackie’s international practice, she currently serves as Chair of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Louisiana, and Vice-Chair of the International Section of the Louisiana State Bar Association. She is also a member of Greater New Orleans, Inc.'s NextGen Council.

Most recently, Jackie was appointed to the Louisiana District Export Council. LDEC is comprised of Louisiana's most experienced export executives who stand ready to advise local companies on export issues and international market development. Jackie's appointment was granted by U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur L. Ross.

In years past, she has served as a volunteer attorney for the non-profits Louisiana Appleseed and The Pro Bono Project. In 2011, Jackie was awarded Louisiana Appleseed’s Good Apple award in recognition for her work drafting the Louisiana Language Access Guidelines. These guidelines, adopted by Justice Kimball in 2012, provide translation services for indigent defendants who do not speak, or have trouble speaking, the English language.
